Course Overview

Why do Tsuen Wan parents choose Muay Thai as their child's activity?

Muay Thai helps children learn self-defence and how to protect themselves from a young age. Applying Muay Thai techniques effectively over a short period of intensive training helps build stamina and endurance, improve physical fitness, coordination and reaction time — developing these skills through training enhances athletic performance and response speed.

But the real reason Muay Thai has become a popular choice among Tsuen Wan parents is often not about "being able to fight." What we hear most often from parents is: "I want my son to be able to sit still and focus", "I want my daughter to be more confident", "I want them to know how to protect themselves". Muay Thai classes require children to remember movement sequences, follow instructions and control their strength — this process itself is the most direct form of focus and self-discipline training.

What sets us apart from typical children's activity classes is our grading and certification system — the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Children don't just attend class after class; instead, they clearly know which level they are at, what to practise next, and when they can take their next grading. This visible sense of progress is the strongest motivation for sustained training.

Our school is the first in Hong Kong to be dual-certified by both I-1, the World Muay Thai Organisation, and WPMTA, the World Professional Muaythai Federation, founded by "Golden Robe Champion" Sifu Ip Man Lung. Our venue spans 5,800 sq ft, with kids' classes taught in small groups of 10. A free trial class is available for first-timers, so you can bring your child to try it out before deciding.

Age Groups

What age can kids start Muay Thai? Can a 4 year old join?

Yes. Our Kids Muay Thai Starter Programme accepts enrolment from age 4 — but the approach is completely different from the one used for children over 8. Here's the real difference between the two groups.

Kids Muay Thai Starter Programme

Ages 4-7 · 60 minutes per class
  • Play-based teaching in a lively, engaging atmosphere
  • Focused on building balance, coordination and spatial awareness
  • Learning basic etiquette and a spirit of respect
  • Close, hands-on guidance at a 1:4 coach-to-student ratio
  • Safety gear and child-sized equipment provided
  • No sparring whatsoever

Training focus by age group

AgeTraining FocusWhat we don't do
4-5 years Play-based fundamentals, following instructions, sitting still, basic etiquette Any sparring, complex combinations, high-intensity conditioning
6-7 years Balance, coordination, spatial awareness, simple strikes and kicks Any sparring, strength training
8-9 years Proper stance, footwork, jabs and hooks, basic roundhouse kicks, defence Full-contact free sparring
10-12 years Combinations, pad-work rhythm, basic knees and elbows, evasion and counters, tactical awareness Full-contact free sparring (controlled drills possible depending on level)

Actual grouping is based on a child's focus and physical coordination, not age alone. Some 7 year olds can already keep pace with the kids' class, while some 8 year olds are better suited to building a foundation in the starter class first. Coaches will give honest advice after the free trial class. For ages 13 and up, see our Teens Muay Thai class.

Eight Benefits

The eight real benefits of Muay Thai for children

Here are the specific changes parents report most often — it's far more than just "exercise."

🧠 Improved Focus

Classes require children to remember movement sequences, control their balance, follow live instructions and adjust their power — this is a classic form of executive function training. Combined with clear goals from the grading system, children naturally learn to concentrate. The most common feedback from parents: they sit still for homework now.

🛡️ Learning Self-Defence

Helps children learn self-defence and how to protect themselves from a young age. Muay Thai's close-range techniques don't rely on size or strength advantages, offering real peace of mind for children who may face bullying at school or need to travel to school alone.

💪 Stamina and Endurance

Helps build stamina and endurance, improving overall physical fitness. A 60-minute class includes skipping, pad work, combinations and conditioning — far more active than a typical children's activity class, and an effective way to cut down screen time.

⚡ Coordination and Reaction Speed

Improves coordination and reaction time — developing these skills through training enhances athletic performance and response speed. Childhood is the fastest period for neuromuscular development, making training especially effective at this age.

🏅 Building Confidence

Every grading passed and every new combination mastered is a real achievement. This kind of confidence, earned through their own effort, is more effective than any amount of encouragement. Shy or introverted children often show noticeable change within a few months.

🙏 Respect and Discipline

Muay Thai places great importance on etiquette, with every class ending in the traditional Wai Kru salute. Our teaching focuses on discipline, self-control and respect — children must learn "when not to use force", not become more aggressive.

😌 Emotional Regulation and Energy Release

Energetic children get a healthy outlet during class; children under academic pressure get an emotional release. Parents report a noticeable drop in emotional outbursts.

👦 Teamwork and Friendship

Small groups of 10 let children get to know and encourage each other. Regular participation in the school's large-scale performance events builds a positive peer group and shared goals.

Safety First

Is Muay Thai safe for children?

This is the question parents ask most often. Here are our specific safety measures — not slogans, but actual practice.

1. No full-contact free sparring in the kids' or starter classes

This is the most important point. In our kids' classes, training is directed at heavy bags and coach-held pads, not other children. Even at more advanced levels where reaction training is needed, it is only done through controlled drills fully supervised by a coach, with power strictly limited.

2. 5,800 sq ft venue fully covered with professional EVA cushion flooring

The entire training area is covered with professional cushion flooring, providing adequate protection even in a fall. The venue is spacious, so there's no risk of different groups of students colliding with each other. You can preview the actual space through our venue photos.

3. Small groups of 10 + full-time coach supervision

Kids' classes are capped at 10 students, and the starter class offers an even closer 1:4 coach-to-student ratio. A coach is present at all times — children are never left to "practise on their own." Small classes also mean coaches remember each child's weaknesses and physical condition.

4. Grouped by age and skill level

A 4 year old will never be grouped with a 12 year old. Grouping takes into account age, size and skill level together, avoiding the risks that come from size mismatches — something not every small gym is able to do.

5. Standard warm-up and stretching routine

Every class includes about 15 minutes of warm-up skipping and dynamic stretching, plus static stretching to cool down before the end. The vast majority of sports injuries come from insufficient warm-up — we never skip it just to squeeze in more drills.

6. Child-sized equipment and safety gear for the starter class

Adult-sized equipment can actually be dangerous for young children. We provide child-sized equipment and safety gear for students aged 4-7, ensuring a proper, protective fit.

7. Parents can watch the entire class

The venue has a parents' waiting area, so you can watch exactly what happens in every class with your own eyes — this transparency is itself the best safety guarantee.

Curriculum

What does a kids' Muay Thai class cover, and what happens in a session?

Grading System

Kids Muay Thai Grading Exams and Certificate System

Our school is the first Muay Thai academy in Hong Kong to offer a certificate course with a structured grading system. This system is what sets us apart most from typical children's activity classes — children don't just "finish class after class"; they have clear goals and visible achievements.

🗺️ A Clear Learning Roadmap

Each term clearly lists the strikes, kicks, knee and elbow techniques, and combinations to be mastered. Children always know which term they're in and what's left before the next level, and parents know exactly what skills their fees are paying for.

🎖️ A Sense of Milestone Achievement

Passing the kids' Muay Thai grading exam earns a certificate. For children, this kind of visible achievement earned through their own effort is the strongest motivation for continued training — many parents tell us their children ask to go to class themselves.

🌍 Internationally Recognised Credentials

Our certificate system aligns with the international standards of I-1, the World Muay Thai Organisation, and WPMTA, the World Professional Muaythai Federation — it's not only valid within our school, and can serve as proof of skill or a school extracurricular record.

🎭 Large-Scale Performance Opportunities

Every year, our school regularly leads students in large-scale performance events. This experience of performing publicly greatly helps children build confidence and resilience.

We never require parents to buy a full equipment set upfront — we recommend trying a class first, confirming your child is genuinely interested in continuing, and then adding equipment gradually based on your coach's advice. For buying advice, just ask your coach — we'll tell you honestly what's genuinely needed and what can wait.

Parent Concerns

The 6 most common concerns parents have

1. Will learning Muay Thai make my child violent?

Quite the opposite. Muay Thai is a martial art that places great emphasis on respecting one's teacher, with every class ending in the Wai Kru salute. Our teaching focuses on discipline, self-control and respect — children must learn "when not to use force." We also explicitly teach that Muay Thai techniques may only be used for self-protection, never to bully classmates. Years of parent feedback show clear improvement in emotional regulation and self-control.

2. My child is energetic and can't sit still — will they disrupt others?

Energetic children are actually among the best suited to Muay Thai — they finally have somewhere to legitimately "release energy." Classes have a clear structure and pace, and with small groups of 10 and full-time coach supervision, energetic children usually settle in within just a few classes. In fact, this is often where we see the biggest transformations.

3. My child is shy or introverted — can they keep up?

Yes. Progress in Muay Thai is measured against yourself, not against others — there's no need to perform in front of anyone; children just need to complete their own movements. The small class setting means children never feel overlooked or compared. If a child is truly reluctant about group settings at first, a few sessions of one-on-one private training can help build confidence before switching to group classes.

4. Will it affect schoolwork and homework time?

At 60 minutes per class, 1-2 times a week, the time commitment is fairly limited. After the weekday 17:00 class ends, there's still plenty of time for homework and dinner. More importantly, regular exercise helps improve focus, sleep quality and stress levels — many parents tell us that after starting Muay Thai, their child actually sits still for homework better than before.

5. Is Muay Thai suitable for girls?

Absolutely — we have plenty of female students. Muay Thai training will not make a child bulky; if anything, it helps improve posture and body carriage. For girls in particular, building self-defence skills and confidence is especially valuable. Our coaching team includes Coach Sarah, who teaches multiple time slots, and female students and their parents generally find it easier to settle in with her.

6. What if my child wants to quit partway through?

This is a very practical concern for parents, which is why we recommend starting with a free trial class, then considering a single term (12 classes) rather than buying the 4-term package right away. We don't push hard sells on long-term contracts — once you've confirmed it's a good fit and your child is genuinely interested, the package becomes the more cost-effective option to consider.

Martial Arts Comparison

Which martial art should my child learn?

Muay Thai, boxing and taekwondo each have their own strengths. Here's an objective comparison from a child development perspective.

CategoryMuay ThaiBoxingTaekwondo
Striking toolsFists, kicks, knees, elbows (eight points of attack)Fists onlyPrimarily kicks
Full-body coordination trainingMost complete (uses both upper and lower body)Focused on upper body and footworkFocused on lower body and flexibility
Practical self-defence valueHigh (close-range knees and elbows are practical)Moderate-high (punches are direct and effective)Moderate (requires distance and space)
Physical exertionHighHighModerate
Etiquette and cultureHighly emphasised (Wai Kru salute)More sport-focused, fewer ritualsEmphasised
Belt / grading systemOur school offers a 15-level certificate systemGenerally no formal gradingHas a belt system
Flexibility requirementsModerate (can build up gradually)LowHigh (high kicks)

There's no single "best" martial art — but if you want your child to gain the most well-rounded physical development, the most practical self-defence skills, and a clear progression system, Muay Thai is well worth prioritising. And the most practical way to decide is to bring your child for a free trial class to experience it firsthand — whether they genuinely enjoy it is what determines whether they'll stick with it.

FAQ

Kids Muay Thai Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the 18 questions parents ask most often before enrolling. If your question isn't covered, feel free to WhatsApp 6516 5120.

What age can children start Muay Thai? Can a 4 year old join?

Yes. The Kids Muay Thai Starter Programme accepts enrolment from age 4. Ages 4-7 focus on play-based teaching, building balance, coordination, spatial awareness and class etiquette, with no sparring whatsoever. Ages 8-12 move into the structured Kids Muay Thai Class, formally learning strikes, kicks, knees and elbows and taking part in grading assessments. Actual grouping depends on a child's focus and physical coordination, and coaches give advice after the free trial class.

How much does the kids' Muay Thai class cost?

The Muay Thai Certificate Course is split into four terms, each 3 months / 12 classes at 60 minutes per class: Term 1 $3,000, Term 2 $3,200, Term 3 $3,500, Term 4 $3,800. The regular price for all four terms totals $13,500, but enrolling in the 4-term package all at once is just $12,000 — a saving of $1,500. We also offer one-on-one private training (from $800 per class) and daily training packages (from $2,500 for 10 classes). All prices are listed openly, with no hidden fees.

How much is one class of kids' Muay Thai?

Based on the 4-term package at $12,000, that's 48 classes (4 terms × 12 classes), or an average of $250 per class. Enrolling term by term instead, it's $250 per class in Term 1, about $267 in Term 2, about $292 in Term 3, and about $317 in Term 4. The daily training package can go as low as $180 per class (100 classes for $18,000).

What time are the kids' Muay Thai classes?

The Kids Muay Thai class (ages 8-12) runs Monday to Friday 17:00-18:00 (after school), and Saturday and Sunday 11:00-12:00 and 16:00-17:00, with a class size of 10. The Kids Muay Thai Starter Programme (ages 4-7) runs Monday to Friday 16:00-17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00-11:00. Every class is 60 minutes. See the full schedule on our class timetable.

Is it safe? Will my child get hurt learning Muay Thai?

Kids' and starter Muay Thai classes do not involve full-contact free sparring. All training takes place on professional EVA cushion flooring across our 5,800 sq ft venue, fully supervised by coaches, and taught in small groups of 10 (1:4 coach-to-student ratio in the starter class). Students are grouped by age and skill level to avoid risks from size mismatches, and every class includes a standard warm-up and stretching routine. The starter class also has child-sized equipment and safety gear. See our safety measures for more.

Will learning Muay Thai make my child violent?

Quite the opposite. Muay Thai is a martial art that places great emphasis on respecting one's teacher, with every class ending in the Wai Kru salute. Our teaching focuses on discipline, self-control and respect, and students must learn "when not to use force." Years of parent feedback show clear improvement in emotional regulation and self-control, not aggression.

What are the benefits of children learning Muay Thai?

Muay Thai helps children learn self-defence and how to protect themselves from a young age. Applying Muay Thai techniques effectively over a short period of intensive training helps build stamina and endurance, improve physical fitness, coordination and reaction time — developing these skills through training enhances athletic performance and response speed. Classes also require remembering movement sequences, following instructions and controlling power, which directly trains focus and executive function. See our eight benefits for more.

Can Muay Thai improve my child's focus?

Yes. Muay Thai classes require students to remember movement sequences, control their balance, follow live coaching instructions and adjust their power all at once — this is classic executive function training. Combined with the grading system's clear goals, students naturally focus in order to progress to the next level. Years of parent feedback show this improved focus carries over into classroom learning and homework.

Which martial art should my child learn? What makes Muay Thai different?

Muay Thai is known as "the Art of Eight Limbs", using fists, kicks, knees and elbows for eight points of attack — the most complete striking range of any martial art. Compared to boxing, which uses only the fists, or taekwondo, which focuses on kicks and pattern scoring, Muay Thai's close-range knee and elbow techniques are more applicable in real self-defence situations and don't rely on size or strength advantages. Muay Thai also offers the most well-rounded conditioning, benefiting a child's cardiovascular fitness, coordination and core development. See our full martial arts comparison.

How does the kids' Muay Thai grading exam work?

YouCanBe Muaythai School is the first Muay Thai academy in Hong Kong to offer a certificate course with a structured grading system. The certificate course's four terms map onto a clear level progression, with a grading exam at the end of each term and clear technical requirements for each level — passing earns a certificate. The system aligns with the international standards of I-1, the World Muay Thai Organisation, and WPMTA, making a child's progress visible and measurable — the strongest source of motivation for continued training. See our grading system for more.

What equipment do I need to prepare for my child?

No equipment is needed for the first free trial class — just sports clothing, shorts, a towel and drinking water. Boxing gloves and basic protective gear are available to borrow at our school, with child-sized equipment and safety gear provided for the starter class. After formally enrolling, you can gradually add personal boxing gloves, hand wraps and a mouthguard based on your coach's advice. See our full equipment checklist.

Can parents watch their child's class?

Yes. Our 5,800 sq ft venue has a parents' waiting area, where you can watch the entire class. We welcome parents to see what their child is learning, but we recommend not giving instructions during class so children can focus on following the coach — this is especially important for building independence and confidence.

My child is very energetic / very shy — is Muay Thai suitable?

Both are very well suited, just in different ways. Energetic children get a healthy outlet during class and learn self-control through structured training; shy children gradually build confidence in the small class setting, since progress in Muay Thai comes from personal effort rather than competing with others. Coaches observe during the trial class and recommend suitable grouping and pacing.

Can Muay Thai count as a school extracurricular activity?

Yes. Our school is a member body of the Hong Kong, China Muaythai Association, with a grading and certificate system aligned to I-1 and WPMTA international standards, and the certificates and levels students earn can serve as proof of an extracurricular activity or skill. Contact us if you need supporting documentation.

Is there a free trial class? How do I book one?

Yes. A free trial class is available for first-timers, with limited spots. Simply message us on WhatsApp 6516 5120 or submit a booking through our online form, letting us know your child's age and available time slots, and we'll arrange a suitable class. We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes early to register and meet the coach.

Should I choose the certificate course, private training, or the daily package?

If you want your child to systematically learn authentic Muay Thai and earn an internationally recognised certificate, choose the Muay Thai Certificate Course (the 4-term package at $12,000 offers the best value); if your child is shy, needs flexible scheduling, or you want to accelerate correcting their technique, choose one-on-one private training; if they've already built the fundamentals and want to train more frequently, the daily training package has the lowest average cost per class (from $180/class). All three can be combined — see our plan comparison table for more.

Where is the school located? Which areas are convenient?

Located in the heart of Tsuen Wan, within walking distance of both Tsuen Wan West and Tsuen Wan MTR stations, making it convenient for residents of Yeung Uk Road, Lipco and Tai Wo Hau to head straight over after school. Students from Kwai Chung, Kwai Tsing District, Tsing Yi and Sham Tseng in the Western New Territories can also reach us with a short trip. See Contact Us for more.
