How to Choose

How Should You Choose a Tsuen Wan Muay Thai Class? Get 3 Things Straight First

The number of Muay Thai gyms in Hong Kong keeps growing, but course quality varies enormously. Some are just a mini session tacked onto a fitness centre, others are tucked into a small industrial unit with instructors whose credentials can't be verified. Choosing a Muay Thai course shouldn't come down to price alone — instructor certification, curriculum structure and venue safety matter far more. The following three questions will decide whether you make the right choice.

1 🎯

What's your goal?

Want your child to build focus and discipline? Are you an adult looking to lose weight with Muay Thai and burn fat? A woman wanting practical self-defence? Different goals call for different class types and training intensity. Every one of our class types has its training goals clearly spelled out.

2 🏅

Can the instructors' credentials be verified?

Anyone can write "years of experience." What really sets gyms apart is whether they hold recognised international certification. We are the first accredited Muay Thai school in Hong Kong certified by both the I-1 World Muaythai Organization and WPMTA.

3 📈

Is there a structured progression system?

The number one reason people give up on Muay Thai is not being able to see their own progress. We use a 15-level grading and certification system, with clear technical requirements at each level and a certificate and belt for every grading passed, so progress becomes visible.

4 💰

Is the pricing transparent?

Many gym websites don't list prices at all, then hard-sell you a long-term contract once you show up. All our prices are published openly — 12 classes for $3,000, no hidden fees and no forced long-term contracts.

Ages 4-7 Little Tigers Muay Thai class for ages 4-7 at YouCanBe Muaythai School Tsuen Wan, game-based Muay Thai training
Little Tigers · Ages 4-7

🌟 Little Tigers Muay Thai

60 minutes per class Small class of 6-8 Ages 4-7

A Muay Thai starter course designed specifically for young children. Through game-based teaching, kids happily learn basic movements, balance and body coordination while building a love of sport.

Many parents ask, "can a 4-year-old learn Muay Thai?" — the answer is yes, but the approach has to be completely different. This class involves no sparring whatsoever; the focus isn't on how well they strike, but on getting kids to love moving, understand instructions, and sit still when needed. The exercise habits and classroom discipline built at this stage are the most important foundation for later moving up to Kids Muay Thai.

Course Highlights

  • Game-based teaching keeps classes lively and fun
  • Focused development of balance, coordination and spatial awareness
  • Learning basic etiquette and a spirit of respect
  • Hands-on instructor guidance at a 1:4 ratio throughout
  • Safety gear and child-sized equipment provided

Who is this class for?

Especially suited to energetic kids who need to burn off steam, or shyer children looking to build confidence. It's also a popular choice among Tsuen Wan parents searching for a children's interest class or kids' martial arts class for ages 4-7.

Kids' Structured Class · Ages 8-12

🥊 Kids Muay Thai

60 minutes per class Small class of 8-10 Includes grading assessments

This is where formal, structured Muay Thai training begins. Students start with basic stance and footwork, gradually mastering Muay Thai's "eight limbs" — fists, feet, knees and elbows — and their combinations, and take part in grading assessments to earn certificates and belts.

The benefits of kids' Muay Thai go far beyond fitness. Classes require students to remember sequences, follow instructions, and control their power — a process that directly trains focus and executive function. The feedback we hear most from parents is that their child now sits still for homework and has fewer emotional outbursts. Because Muay Thai places huge emphasis on etiquette toward instructors, students naturally learn to respect their teachers and training partners — rather than "learning violence," as some parents worry, they learn when not to use force.

Course Highlights

  • Structured training in Muay Thai's four weapons: fists, feet, knees and elbows
  • Progressive combination and pad-work drills
  • Grading assessments leading to a personal certificate and belt
  • Builds focus, self-discipline and resilience alongside technique
  • No full-contact free sparring; grouped by level to ensure safety
  • Regular participation in the school's showcase events

Safety Arrangements

All training takes place on professional EVA shock-absorbing mats in our 5,800 sq ft facility, under constant instructor supervision. Students are grouped by age and level to avoid risks from size mismatches, and every class includes a standard warm-up and stretching routine. The venue has a waiting area where parents can watch the entire class.

Teens · Ages 11-17

🔥 Teens Muay Thai

60 minutes per class 10-12 students High-intensity training

A Muay Thai programme designed for teenagers, combining technique with conditioning to help them relieve stress, build self-discipline, and learn practical self-defence skills.

Facing exam pressure and social anxiety, teenagers need a healthy emotional outlet. Compared with plain gym workouts, the advantage of a teens' Muay Thai class is that there's real technique to master, clear milestones to aim for, and a disciplined, positive peer group. Many parents tell us their child's routine and time management improved noticeably after starting Muay Thai.

Course Highlights

  • Full Muay Thai technical system: fists, feet, knees, elbows and basic clinch work
  • High-intensity conditioning and core training to boost cardio and power
  • Practical self-defence skills suited to real everyday situations
  • Connects into our grading and certification system, with a path to competing
  • Builds discipline, stress tolerance and emotional management
  • Flexible scheduling that can adapt around DSE and exam periods

For students with competitive ambitions

Students who reach the appropriate level and want to step into the ring can move onto our fighter training track. Our school's founder, Principal Yip Man Lung, is the founder of the I-1 World Muaythai Organization, giving students access to a full competitive pathway rarely available elsewhere in Hong Kong. See About YouCanBe Muaythai School for more.

💪 Adults Muay Thai

60 minutes per class 12-15 students Level-graded teaching

A Muay Thai class suited to adults of every level — whether you're a complete beginner or already experienced, you'll pick up practical Muay Thai skills. Teaching is level-graded, and single drop-in sessions are also available.

Over half our adult students sign up with absolutely no sports background. The beginner group starts from the most basic stance and footwork, and instructors adjust the intensity to your fitness level — you'll never be pushed to keep up with anyone else. As for questions like "is 30 too old to start Muay Thai?" or "Muay Thai at 40" — we have plenty of students aged 40 and above, even 50 and above. Older students often bring a more focused attitude and pick up technique even faster.

Course Highlights

  • Level-graded teaching: beginner, intermediate and advanced groups by ability
  • High-intensity interval training for effective Muay Thai weight loss and toning
  • Complete technical training: fists, feet, knees, elbows and clinch work
  • Practical self-defence skills for everyday situations
  • Evening slots designed for working professionals in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung
  • Single drop-in sessions available for a flexible schedule

What happens in an adult Muay Thai class

Skipping warm-up (about 15 minutes) → technique instruction (about 20 minutes) → paired pad work with the instructor (about 15 minutes) → core conditioning (about 10 minutes) → stretching and the closing respect ritual. The full class runs 60 minutes, and there is no sparring in a beginner's first class.

Women's Class Women's Muay Thai class in Tsuen Wan, fat-loss toning and practical self-defence training
Women Only

🌸 Women's Muay Thai

60 minutes per class 8-12 students Women only

A Muay Thai class designed specifically for women, focused on fat loss and toning, practical self-defence, and stress relief, in a comfortable, pressure-free environment — the top choice for students in Tsuen Wan searching for a women's Muay Thai class.

The question we hear most often is, "will Muay Thai make women bulky?" — the answer is no. Muay Thai training centres on high-intensity interval exercise combined with core and cardiovascular work, so the result is reduced body fat and a leaner, more toned physique rather than a major increase in muscle bulk. Just as important, Muay Thai's close-range knee, elbow and clinch techniques are highly practical in real self-defence situations and don't rely on physical size — a point of particular value for women.

Course Highlights

  • Women-only sessions in a comfortable, pressure-free environment
  • Effective fat loss and toning, with a focus on the waistline and overall shape
  • Practical self-defence skills designed for real situations
  • Effective release of work and life stress
  • Easy to keep up even from zero fitness background

Muay Thai fat loss vs. running

A 60-minute Muay Thai class includes skipping, pad work, combinations and conditioning — a form of high-intensity interval training that generally burns more calories than jogging for the same length of time, with a lasting after-burn effect. Because it trains the core and full-body muscle groups at once, changes in body shape are usually more noticeable than with cardio alone.

Grading System

15-Level Muay Thai Grading & Certification System

At most gyms, each class stands alone — after a class you have no idea how much you've improved or what to work on next. YouCanBe Muaythai School is the first Muay Thai training school in Hong Kong to offer a graded certificate course system, breaking the learning path down into 15 clearly defined levels, each with specific technical requirements and assessment standards, awarding a dedicated certificate and belt on completion. The system is aligned with I-1 World Muaythai Organization and WPMTA (World Professional Muaythai Association) international standards.

📋 🗺️

A Clear Learning Roadmap

Each level lists the strikes, kicks, knee and elbow techniques and combinations you need to master. Students always know exactly which level they're at and what's left to reach the next.

🏅 🎖️

A Sense of Achievement at Every Stage

Pass a Muay Thai grading exam and you're awarded a dedicated certificate and belt. For children especially, this visible achievement is the strongest motivator to keep training.

🌍 📜

Internationally Recognised Credentials

The certificate system is aligned with I-1 and WPMTA international standards — it doesn't just hold value within our school. It can also serve as proof of extracurricular activity and skill.

At what age can a child start learning Muay Thai?+
Our Little Tigers Muay Thai class accepts students from age 4. Ages 4 to 7 focus on game-based teaching, building balance, coordination and classroom etiquette; from age 8, students can move up to Kids Muay Thai, learning fists, feet, knees and elbows systematically and taking part in grading assessments. The actual placement depends on the child's focus and coordination, and the instructor will give a recommendation after the trial class.
How is the Muay Thai class fee calculated? How much per class?+
The 12-class package for Kids, Teens and Adults Muay Thai classes is all HK$3,000, averaging HK$250 per class. All prices are published openly with no hidden fees and no hard-sell long-term contracts. See the Course Pricing section for details.
How long is each Muay Thai class, and how big are the classes?+
Every class type runs 60 minutes. Class size caps are set by age group: Little Tigers Muay Thai 6-8 students (1:4 instructor ratio), Kids Muay Thai 8-10 students, Teens Muay Thai 10-12 students, Adults Muay Thai 12-15 students, and Women's Muay Thai 8-12 students. Small classes ensure every student gets enough guidance.
Do I need to bring my own equipment for my first Muay Thai class?+
No equipment is needed for a trial class — just wear sportswear and shorts, and bring a towel and water. Gloves and basic protective gear are available to borrow, and the Little Tigers class also has child-sized equipment and safety gear. After formally enrolling, you can gradually add your own gloves, hand wraps and mouthguard based on your instructor's recommendations.
Is the venue safe? Could my child get hurt?+
The school has a dedicated 5,800 sq ft facility, fully fitted with professional EVA shock-absorbing mats, under constant instructor supervision. Kids' and Little Tigers' classes do not include full-contact free sparring, and students are grouped by age and level to avoid risks from size mismatches. Every class includes a standard warm-up and stretching routine, and there's a parent waiting area where you can watch the entire class.
How does the Muay Thai grading and certification system work?+
We are the first Muay Thai training school in Hong Kong to offer a graded certificate course system, with a complete 15-level structure. Each level has clear technical requirements, and passing the assessment earns a dedicated certificate and belt. How do I book a Muay Thai trial class?+
Simply WhatsApp 6516 5120 or submit a booking through our online form, and we'll confirm a suitable time slot with you. We recommend booking ahead to secure a spot, and arriving 15 minutes early to check in and meet your instructor.
Can I take leave or reschedule a class? Does the package expire?+
If you need to take leave or reschedule, please let us know in advance so we can arrange a make-up class or adjust your slot. For the specific terms on package validity and make-up classes, please confirm with our staff before enrolling — we'll lay everything out clearly, with no hidden conditions.
Can I join the Adults Muay Thai class with zero sports background?+
Absolutely. Adults Muay Thai uses level-graded teaching — the beginner group starts from the most basic stance and footwork, and instructors adjust the intensity to your own fitness level, so you'll never be pushed to keep up with anyone else. Over half our adult students sign up with zero sports background.
Is 30 or 40 too old to start learning Muay Thai?+
Not at all. Training intensity can be fully adjusted to your own fitness level, and we have plenty of students aged 40 and above, even 50 and above. Older students often bring a more focused attitude and pick up technique even faster. The key is progressing gradually with a thorough warm-up.
Is Muay Thai effective for weight loss? How many calories does one class burn?+
A 60-minute Muay Thai class includes a skipping warm-up, technique instruction, paired pad work and conditioning — a form of high-intensity interval training that generally burns more calories than jogging for the same length of time, with a lasting after-burn effect. Combined with a sensible diet, most students see noticeable changes in body fat and shape after one to three months of consistent training.
Will women get very muscular from Muay Thai?+
No. Muay Thai training centres on high-intensity interval exercise combined with core and cardiovascular work, so the result is reduced body fat and a leaner, more toned shape rather than a major increase in muscle bulk. We also run a dedicated Women's Muay Thai class in a comfortable, pressure-free environment.
Do you offer private one-on-one Muay Thai coaching?+
Yes. We offer one-on-one and two-on-one private Muay Thai training, ideal for students who want to progress quickly, need flexible timing, or aren't comfortable in a group-class setting. Your instructor will build a training plan around your goals — fat loss, competing, self-defence, or fixing technique. WhatsApp 6516 5120 for rates and available time slots.
Can adults drop in for a single class?+
Yes. Adults Muay Thai offers a single drop-in option, suited to students with irregular schedules or who want to try a few more classes before committing to a package. Please check with our staff for details.
How should I choose a Muay Thai class? What criteria matter?+
We recommend checking five things: whether instructors hold verifiable international certification, whether the course has a structured progression and grading system, whether the venue is a dedicated, independent space that meets safety standards, whether pricing is fully transparent with no forced contracts, and whether class sizes are reasonable. We are the first Muay Thai school in Hong Kong certified by both the I-1 World Muaythai Organization and WPMTA, and we run a 15-level grading and certification system. See About YouCanBe Muaythai School for more.
Can the Muay Thai course certificate be used as proof of extracurricular activity?+
Yes. We are a member body of the Hong Kong, China Muaythai Council, and our grading and certification system is aligned with international standards, so the certificates and levels students earn can serve as proof of extracurricular activity and skill. Contact us if you need supporting documents.
